Principal Investigator
David van Dijk
Associate Professor of Computer Science & Medicine
David van Dijk is Associate Professor of Computer Science and Medicine at Yale, and a member of the Wu Tsai Institute and the Yale Institute for Foundations of Data Science. The lab builds AI systems that learn the rules of biology directly from data, from methods that became standard tools in single-cell genomics (MAGIC, PHATE, MELD, CINEMA-OT) to foundation models that treat biology as a language (Cell2Sentence, C2S-Scale, BrainLM). C2S-Scale, built with Google Research and Google DeepMind, generated a new cancer-immunotherapy hypothesis that was then confirmed in living cells. David trained in computer science at the University of Amsterdam (PhD) and did postdoctoral work at the Weizmann Institute and Columbia University. The lab is supported by an NIH Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA, R35) and an NSF CAREER Award.
